Downer’s commitment to creating an inclusive workforce
At Downer, we are committed to creating an inclusive workplace that supports and values our people.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme is ‘Each for Equal’, which is about challenging stereotypes and broadening perceptions. It’s also about collaboration and strength in numbers.
These themes resonate strongly with Downer.
We are busy putting strategies in place to help us attain a better gender balance across our workforce, with a particular focus on increasing the number of women in leadership roles at all levels.
International Women’s Day is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate, as both individuals and as part of Downer, the invaluable contributions women make to Downer and the wider community.
At Downer, we encourage our people to be #EachforEqual. We urge them to participate in IWD events and to make a personal commitment to help forge a gender equal world – and share that commitment with their work colleagues, family and friends.
Holding or participating in an International Women’s Day event is a step towards achieving an equal world by starting a conversation on what we can do as individuals and as a company to press for progress.
We believe that an inclusive and flexible workplace will build a diverse workforce that is stronger and more engaged. This will enable us to attract and retain the most talented people and create a competitive advantage.
While we still have a way to go, each day we are taking a step in the right direction to work towards a gender equal workforce.
We have implemented a coordinated and collaborative approach to diversity and inclusion that provides Business Unit flexibility while meeting Downer-wide objectives. Our agenda and initiatives are set top down and driven bottom up, with outcomes tied to performance measures cascaded to manager level to achieve transparency on progress and build inclusion for everyone.
This is helping effect tangible change across the business.
In 2019 we made progress towards our gender diversity goals, and subsequently revised our measurable objectives for FY20.
The revised strategy and targets consider Downer’s FY19 performance and recognise the Group-wide commitment to increasing the representation of women in the workforce and management positions. The targets have been endorsed by the Downer Board and reinforce the company’s Diversity & Inclusion strategy.
Ultimately, the actions of our people will help us reach these targets. We empower them to be #EachforEqual, and value their input to help achieve a better gender balance in our workforce.
